Calf-Strain

These muscles are responsible for explosive movements such as sprinting, jumping pivoting, and changing directions quickly. An acute calf strain can cause stretching or tearing of these muscles resulting in sudden pain, swelling and bruising in the lower leg. These injuries can be caused by overexertion, improper footwear, and sudden changes in direction. Recovery depends on the degree of muscle tearing (grades 1-3). This progression can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.  

Signs and symptoms include: 

  •  Sudden pain with exercise 
  • Pain and swelling in the lower leg 
  • Bruising and tenderness in the calf  
  • Muscle spasms in the lower leg
