What Is Hip Pain?

The hip joint is the largest ball and socket joint in the body and is designed to move smoothly through many different planes of motion. There are numerous muscular, ligamentous, and fascial structures surrounding the hip. Injuries to the soft tissue or joint itself can cause deep, achy and sometime sharp pain with certain movements, namely hip rotation.

This pain can severely limit your ability to move freely and comfortably. Whether you’re an athlete aiming to complete your first century on the bike, or you simply want to enjoy a leisurely walk with your dog, hip pain can stop you from engaging in activities that once felt effortless. Hip pain can occur for various reasons, such as injury, overuse or age-related conditions like osteoarthritis. It can affect people of all activity levels and may manifest as a sharp, stabbing pain or a dull, persistent ache in the hip or groin area.

While rest, ice, and basic stretching exercises may offer temporary relief, they often don’t address the underlying cause of the pain, leading to frustration and recurring discomfort. Left untreated, hip pain can limit mobility, decrease flexibility, and prevent you from engaging in both everyday activities and high-performance exercises. At Adapt Sports Therapy, we take a comprehensive, hands-on approach to not only relieve your pain but also help restore your hip function, so you can get back to living the active, pain-free life you deserve.

What Are The Symptoms of Hip Pain?

The symptoms of hip pain can manifest in various ways however, some of the more common signs include:

  • Sharp or aching pain: Typically felt in the front, side, or back of the hip. This pain may increase with movement, such as walking, running, or climbing stairs.
  • Limited range of motion: You may notice stiffness or an inability to fully move your hip, making it difficult to squat, bend over, or engage in activities that require hip rotation.
  • Pain when lying down: Some people experience pain when lying on their side or when turning over in bed, which can interfere with sleep and recovery.
  • Pain radiating to the thigh or groin: The discomfort may spread to other areas of the body, such as the groin, thigh, or buttocks, especially with movement.
  • Weakness or instability: You may feel weakness in the hip joint, which can make activities like walking, standing for long periods, or performing physical tasks more difficult.
  • Swelling or tenderness: Inflammation around the hip joint, which may accompany an injury or condition like bursitis, can lead to visible swelling and tenderness to the touch.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing Hip Pain?

At Adapt Sports Therapy, we recognize how debilitating hip pain can be to your life – in some cases, we’ve seen the condition severely restrict mobility and limit what someone can do in their life. We believe that all natural treatments should be explored before any consideration is given to surgery, which is why we have a thorough treatment plan to maximize the body’s natural healing ability:

1. Personalized Assessment to Identify the Root Cause

Our first step in treating hip pain is to perform a thorough assessment to determine the underlying cause. We take the time to listen to your symptoms, examine your movement patterns, and evaluate your posture. Whether the issue is related to muscle imbalances, joint misalignment, or an underlying condition like arthritis, our detailed assessment helps us create a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

2. Hands-On Manual Therapy to Relieve Pain and Restore Mobility

Once we’ve identified the source of your hip pain, we begin treatment with hands-on manual therapy. This may include techniques such as myofascial release, joint mobilization, and soft tissue manipulation. These therapies help relieve tension, reduce inflammation, and restore mobility in the hip joint and surrounding muscles. Our goal is to address the discomfort directly at the source, promoting healing and improving the range of motion in the hip.

3. Targeted Strengthening Exercises for Long-Term Relief

After reducing the pain and restoring some movement, we focus on rebuilding strength in the muscles around your hip joint. Targeted exercises are essential for strengthening the hip flexors, glutes, and surrounding muscle groups that provide stability and support to the hip. These exercises help prevent future injury by ensuring that the hip joint functions optimally. Whether your goal is to get back to running, cycling, or simply moving pain-free, we tailor the exercises to meet your specific needs and goals.

4. Restoring Confidence in Movement and Preventing Recurrence

Hip pain often leads to altered movement patterns, where you may subconsciously avoid using the affected leg or shift your posture to avoid pain. This can lead to compensations and weakness. At Adapt Sports Therapy, we work with you to restore your confidence in movement by correcting any faulty movement patterns and re-training your body to move efficiently and safely. We teach you how to perform everyday tasks and physical activities with proper technique to prevent strain on your hip, ensuring that you stay pain-free in the long run.

5. Education and Prevention for Long-Term Success

Prevention is key when it comes to hip pain. At Adapt Sports Therapy, we believe in empowering you with the knowledge to maintain hip health long after your initial treatment. We educate you on proper posture, movement techniques, and how to protect your hips during physical activities. We also provide recommendations for stretching and strengthening routines to keep your hips strong and flexible, reducing the risk of future pain or injury.
