What Is Sciatica?
Living with sciatica can be incredibly debilitating. You’ve likely tried various interventions like pain relievers, back braces, or injections, all in the hope of finding relief. But despite your efforts, the pain may still persist, and you’re left feeling frustrated with no long-term solution in sight. Sciatica can strike without warning and severely limit your ability to enjoy everyday activities like biking or even something as simple as bending down to pick up something from the floor.
Sciatica is a symptom brought on by other underlying conditions occurring in the body. The term sciatica is used in the medical community to describe a type of leg pain, tingling, weakness, or numbness. It can also be associated with pain that travels down the back of the leg and started in the buttocks. This is the location of the sciatic nerve which is the largest nerve in the body.
What Are The Symptoms of Sciatica?
Sciatica is characterized by several symptoms that can vary in intensity, ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain. The common symptoms include:
- Radiating Pain: Pain that starts in the lower back and travels down through the buttocks and into one or both legs, often following the path of the sciatic nerve. This pain can be sharp, burning, or dull.
- Tingling or “Pins and Needles” Sensation: Often felt in the leg or foot, particularly along the sciatic nerve’s path, this sensation can be intermittent or constant.
- Numbness: Some individuals may experience numbness or reduced sensation in the affected leg or foot, making it hard to feel things like touch or temperature.
- Muscle Weakness: Weakness in the leg or foot, making activities like walking, standing, or even controlling leg movement more difficult.
- Increased Pain with Certain Movements: Pain often worsens with sitting, standing, coughing, or sneezing, and may intensify with actions like bending, twisting, or lifting.
- Limited Mobility: In severe cases, sciatica can restrict movement, making it difficult to move the leg normally or carry out daily activities.
